Coupling of SEO with social media is one of the least appreciated aspects in developing internet market strategies. The phenomenal development of social media recently has made communication between SEO and social media experts imperative for developing a comprehensive and well-coordinated internet marketing plan. Both optimizing techniques, when intertwined, will aid in enhancing the visibility of a brand online. But, aligning SEO with social media needs some fine-tuning.
Using Social Media for Link Development
Link development is one of the most important benefits brought by social media to search engine optimization. Social media has become very important from an SEO perspective, as search engines started incorporating social signals like shares, likes, etc. into their ranking algorithms. For example, Facebook data is now integrated into Bing, while Google integrates some Googe+ signals. Now there is a direct relation between what happens on social networks, and what people get in their search results. Due to recent changes in search engines algorithms, old and low-value tactics used to develop links no longer work the same, and may even negatively affect your site. What really works now is marketing of strong and authoritative content, that highlights your company’s expertise and value proposition on the market. This can be achieved if SEO professionals can leverage the activities of their social media team. The relationships that the social media team has can be used to acquire relevant links and market high value content in multiple ways.
Align Blogging for SEO and Social Media
Blogs can act as one of the most effective ways to build links and authority if you can consistently post high quality material on your blogs. Blog posts are a good opportunity to build more internal links to the relevant content.
Blog posts, which are shared on social networks like Facebook, can be useful to increase traffic to your main site, if your blog and main site are linked well, and easily navigable. But, many organizations fail to build relevant links from a company’s blog to their main website. Additionally, some blogs don’t have their global navigation template included in them. A link to the most important page on your website can be considered as a vote. By including the site’s main global navigation template on all the blog pages, the number of votes to your most important pages can be increased dramatically. Visitors to your blog will also be pleased if they can quickly navigate to your main site through a link.
Leverage More on Popular Historical Links
Many organizations create new URLs when promoting new content rather than updating their more popular existing URLs which have good historical link connectivity. As an example, when a company is issuing a new coupon for one of its products, it will generally create a new landing page (with a new URL) for the coupon code and post it on its Facebook and Google+ pages. But, if instead the company puts the coupon code on an existing product page, it will help the product page to get more social mentions, thus increasing ranking on search engines.
To make these tactics work, you need to make sure that your social media and SEO teams are working together. This will eventually maximize ROI from both the teams.
